Firewall FAQ
A firewall on URHnet provides better security for
our residents and also the campus community. Security
problems are a major cause of network interruptions on campus, and the
firewall helps to decrease the number of problems and computers that
get “hacked” on URHnet. You will still be able to do all the things you need, such
as email, games, chat, IRC, ICQ, web surfing, streaming, downloading files, etc.
The campus firewall will ONLY affect connections off campus and does
not affect applications within campus.
Q. So what does this mean!?
A. For the majority of residents, you will NOT have any problems
and do not need to do anything.
Q. Do I need to do anything?
A. The majority of
students do not need to worry about the campus firewall and
will not even notice it.
Q. Can I still do all the stuff I want to in the
FC group?
A. That depends on what you want to do.
You can still do all the common stuff like email, UI-Direct, chat, AIM,
ICQ, IRC, web surfing, downloading files, most games, etc. See our firewall
application page for more details. If you have needs beyond that (such as running a web
server or other services from your room),
look to our information on changing your firewall for more instructions.
Q. Can I still do all my file sharing?
A. You can still use popular file sharing programs.
However, as always, you should be aware of any copyright issues and the
large amounts of traffic they can produce.
Q. What about the campus VPN, will that help?
A. The VPN provides
secure connections when trying to access some services on your URHnet connection from off campus.
You cannot use VPN in your dorm room unless, for example, it is a "Quick Connect" connection during the summer.
See http://www.cites.uiuc.edu/vpn/ for more
details.
Q. I think I need to change my firewall settings. What do I do?
A. Read our information on changing your firewall
for instructions.
