Changing Your Firewall
If you are interested in changing your firewall group, first read the following webpage
about the FC & MC firewall groups: FC & MC Application Compatibility
to determine if you really need to run services and be in the MC
(Mostly Closed) firewall group or if you can stay in the FC (Fully
Closed) group. This change can be requested at anytime during the school
year so you can try the FC group first.
Additionally, all residents in your room will be required to request the change.
The request will serve as proof that you have read and understand the importance of computer
security, the need to patch or update your computer, and the need to
monitor it to keep it secure. Housing reserves the right to move you back to the FC firewall group
if these requirements are not met.
- All residents in the room will be required to request the
change.
- The IPs of all the computers in the room will change when they
are moved into the MC firewall group. These IPs will be in a different network than those in the FC firewall group.
This may cause compatibility issues in some applications, including games playable over LAN.
- The campus firewall will ONLY affect connections off campus
and does not affect applications within campus.

www.housing.uiuc.edu/technology/help.
Submit an Online Help Request, select the option for “Change My Firewall Setting” and
paste the following into the form as an understanding that you have
read the following material:
“Move my room to the MC firewall group. I understand the importance of keeping my computer and services it is
running secure. I also understand the need to keep current virus scanners, patches,
updates, hotfixes, etc. I understand that my use of the MC firewall group is constrained by the campus
Acceptable Use Policy, and that violations of this policy
may lead to my MC group privileges being revoked.”
- We will try to notify you when the change will occur to help
minimize problems when your IP changes. If you would like us to make the change ASAP, without our waiting to get in
touch with you, please mention that in your ticket submission.
- If you want to move back into the FC firewall group just perform
the same procedure as above but replace "MC" with
"FC".
- In the event that we disable your connection or quarantine your room for a virus infection or other security risk
(i.e. network scanning, copyright violation, etc.), we reserve the right to:
- On the first offense, move your connection back to the FC network for a minimum of one month.
- On later offenses, move your connection back to the FC network for a period of time up to the remainder
of the school year.
