Virus Protection
Do I Need Virus Protection?
YES! Campus Policies mandate that all computers on campus must have anti-virus
software installed. This includes personal computers in Housing residence halls.
Even if it was not a requirement, having anti-virus software is simply a good idea.
A virus scanner is your first line of defense against malicious viruses that can damage the files,
software, and hardware on your computer

Updating Virus Protection
Your antivirus software should update itself automatically when new virus definition files or application updates are
released, keeping your computer safe against viruses. If, for any reason, you wish to check to see if there are
updates available at another time, follow these simple steps. The following instructions are written for McAfee Virus Scan 8.0i
installed on a system running either Microsoft Windows XP or 2000, but the procedure is similar under other operating
systems, earlier McAfee versions, and other antivirus applications.
|
To update your virus protection software, right-click on the blue shield icon for McAfee Virus Scan in your system tray (the lower
right corner of your desktop, near the clock). Note: you may have to click a button with an arrow logo (<<) on it to see the McAfee icon.
|
 | |
Select Update Now... from the menu that appears,
as shown below.

|
The following box will pop up and run the update and auto close when it is complete. If the update fails, make sure you can connect to the internet and try again.
If you do have an internet connection and the update fails again,
you should contact a net tech.

Run a Scan or Clean an Already Infected System |
Your antivirus software will run regular scans to make sure that your computer is clean of viruses. If you think your
computer is infected or you want to run an additional scan, you should first update your virus definitions.
Then, right-click on the blue shield icon for McAfee Virus Scan in your system tray (the lower right corner of your desktop, near the clock).
Select On-Demand Scan... from the menu that appears, as shown below. Note: you may have to click a button with an arrow logo on it
(shown on the right) to see the McAfee icon.

|
In the window that appears, select the Actions tab.
Click Start to begin the scan.

|
As the scan proceeds, it will list the viruses that are found on your system. If any entry in the Status column says something
other than "Cleaned" or "Deleted," contact a NetTech through one of the methods detailed on our
help pages.
