Installing and using Spybot

• Step 1: Install Spybot
• Step 2: Spybot, first use wizard
• Step 3: Scan your computer with Spybot

Step 1: Install Spybot.

Download SpyBot here. Save the download to your desktop then double click on the download to start setup.

Select the language you prefer and then click Ok.

Now click Next for begin setup.

Check the I accept the agreement option and click on Next.

Choose the destination file for Spybot and then click Next.

You may choose to deselect installation of 'Additional Languages' and 'Skins to change appearance' by unchecking the boxes. Make sure to select Download updates immediately then click Next.

Allow a shortcut to be installed in your Start Menu by clicking Next.

You should create a desktop or quick launch icon so you can find spybot for later use. Using Internet Explorer protection is a good idea. Select your preferences, then click Next.

Now click Install.

Click Install to update the detection rules in the Spybot default location.

Once updates have completed hit Close.

Click Finish to complete installation and restart your computer.

Step 2: Spybot, first use wizard

After installing Spybot, find the icon on your desktop or in All Programs. The first time you run the program it goes through a Wizard. To begin double click on the found icon then click on Create registry backup. Be patient, as backing up the registry may take a few moments. When it has finished it will automatically take you to the next screen. If you wish to skip the backup (not recommended), hit Next.

Click Search for updates to get the latest spyware definitions. This is a very important step. Always be sure to get the newest definitions before running a scan.

Next click on Download all available updates. Then Next, when update has finished.

Now Immunize this system.

After Immunization has completed click Next.

Click Start using the program to begin the scan.

Step 3: Scan your computer with Spybot.

First, prior to scanning your machine, make sure you have the latest definition files.
From the opening spybot screen click Search for Updates (#1).
Your other option is to click the Update icon on the left toolbar, then click the Search for Updates (#1) button on the top toolbar.

After searching, select all updates for installation, and then Download Updates (#2).

After downloading all available updates, you may see Spybot re-load.
After getting the latest definition files, click on the Search and Destroy icon (#3 in above image)
and then click on Check for problems.

When the scan is complete, click on Fix selected problems (Make sure you have all items selected) and then Yes.

Click Yes so all entries are removed from your computer.

Spybot may then alert you that it cannot delete all of the spyware found,
please allow Spybot to run after your computer restarts by clicking Yes.
If this did not happen, skip ahead 2 steps.

Click Ok and then restart your computer.

Otherwise, it may simply inform you that all problems have been fixed.

It is also a good idea to immunize your computer.
Click the Immunize icon on the left toolbar, a box will pop up informing you if you need to Immunize,
if so click the Immunize button near the top of the page.
After it is done, you may close the program.

If Spybot informed you it could not delete all items then you need to re-start your computer
to allow Spybot to finishing cleaning your machine.
