Network Hub/Switch

Do I Need a Network Hub/Switch?

In Daniels Hall, Sherman Hall, and the apartments at Goodwin and Green, Housing provides a network port for each resident, so you will only need a mini-hub if you plan on connecting more computers than the number of residents in the room.

In Orchard Downs Housing provides cable modems to access Comcast Internet. If you want to connect more than one computer please see the Orchard Downs computer center to borrow a router. For instructions on connecting to Comcast Internet please see: www.housing.uiuc.edu/technology/OD/index.htm

In all other halls, the hub will already be in your room when you move in.

Connecting  a Network Hub/Switch

When you get your hub, you will also find instructions on how to connect your computer to the network.  A correct connection will have green lights, as shown below.  Make sure to plug the large end of the blue cable into the hub, and the small end into the wall jack, as shown below.

Purchasing a Network Hub/Switch

If you live in Daniels Hall, Sherman Hall, or the apartments at Goodwin and Green, or if you would just like to have a mini-hub of your own, you can purchase one at most major computing retailers. Please note: mini-hubs will not work for Orchard Downs residents. Orchard Downs residents can rent a router from the OD computer lab. These mini-hubs typically cost under $50. (We use a 10/100 Linksys EZXS55W mini-switch). The mini-hub can also be used at home, at an apartment, at LAN-parties, anywhere your computer can hook into a network.

WARNING: Network routers and wireless access points are NOT allowed on URHnet, due to their ability to adversely affect the network for everyone. Housing reserves the right to turn off connections on which we detect a router or wireless access point.
