Operating System

Discover your operating system by following the steps below. Note: Instructions are for Windows users only.

If your computer has a Windows Logo button in the lower left corner of your screen, click it.  Then type winver and hit the Enter key.

If your computer has a Start button in the lower left corner of your screen, click it. Then find and click on the Run button. In the dialogue box that appears type in winver in the text field next to Open: Then hit OK.

If you ran the command successfully a box will pop up. The logo at the top of the box will tell you the version of Windows you have. The box should look like one of the following:

  • If you have Windows Vista:
Note: The below picture shows the Business version of Vista, but all versions of Vista are supported by University Housing.

  • If you have Windows XP:
Note, the box should indicate that you are running Service Pack 2. If it does not, it is imperative that you install Service Pack 2 from Windows Update.

  • If you have Windows 2000:
Note, the box should indicate that you are running Service Pack 2. If it does not, it is imperative that you install Service Pack 4 from Windows Update.

  • If you have Windows 98 or 95:
(Windows 95 not shown, replace "Windows 98" with "Windows 95")
Note, Housing no longer supports Windows 95/98 and in order to receive support you must upgrade to Windows XP or Vista.

  • If you do not have any of the systems above, and see some version of the following logo, or if it says "Windows ME" then you have Windows Millennium Edition. Note, Housing no longer supports Windows ME and in order to receive support you must upgrade to Windows XP or Vista.

  • If you do not see your operating system represented above and do not have Windows Vista, a Linux, or a Macintosh OS we recommend converting to one of our supported operating systems.
