A sunny day. About Options for Undergraduate Students ...

Recognizing the importance of the transition to Illinois, first year students are required to live in a University Residence Hall (URH), a privately owned certified facility, or a fraternity and sorority house. University Residence Halls (URH) offer various living options, including living-learning communities, substance-free housing, non-visitation floors and Transfer Clusters. More than three-quarters of entering freshmen and one-third of transfer students typically choose to live in the University Residence Halls on campus. The privately owned certified housing units on campus are home to over 2,400 students, typically one-quarter of the entering freshman class and one third of the transfer students. Located on or near the campus, all are within walking distance of the Quad, classrooms and libraries.

If you have questions about living on-campus in any of our areas, please contact the Housing Information Office (217-333-7111, housing@uiuc.edu).

Private Certified Housing
Entering our 38th academic season the PCH facilities have been home to over 93,000 U of I students. "Learning by Living," our motto, gives undergraduate students an opportunity to excel in the classroom and at home. Learn more by clicking here.

Living-Learning Communities
University undergraduate residence halls are home to many living-learning programs and unique communities. Each community provides added programming and academic benefits to members including classes on-site, co-enrollment in classes, or reserved seats in classes. There are also advising and referral services, tutors, and special opportunities to interact with faculty. We think these are terrific places to be!

university apartments
Undergraduate students with 30 or more credits are eligible to apply for a lease at Ashton Woods Apartments, which offers two-bedroom unfurnished apartments on South First Street. For details about who is eligible to live at Ashton Woods, please see the University Apartments eligibility statement.

Special Living Options
University Housing also offers three distinct living options for our residents who wish to keep company in a specific environment.

  1. Non-Visitation Community: Here the community members agree to not have visitors of the opposite gender in their rooms at any time. This living options is available to men living on one floor in Oglesby Hall and women living on one wing in Lincoln Avenue Residence Halls.

  2. Substance-Free Hall: For residents interested in living in a residence hall free from alcohol (even if 21 years of age), and chemicals or drugs (other than prescribed medications), Snyder Hall in the Peabody Drive Area, our Substance-Free hall, is a good match. While a substance-free area does not change existing University policies that pertain to substances on campus, residents of this hall are committed to healthy habits and do not use tobacco products, alcohol, and other drugs inside the hall or on campus.

  3. Transfer Student Cluster: A community has been developed specifically for transfer students. The RA staff in this community focus on the interests and needs of transfer students to assist their transition to Illinois.
