- At Your ServiceMore than just a place to live, University Housing provides many services to each resident. We encourage you to take full advantage of all that your hall has to offer.
Each of the undergraduate halls in Urbana has a 24-hour desk where services include mail delivery, emergency keys, night security, equipment check-out, and meal passes. (Please check your individual hall for specific services.)
In Champaign, one area office is provided in each cluster of halls (the Gregory Drive area office is located in Garner Hall and the Peabody Drive area office is located in Snyder Hall). The Champaign area offices are open 24 hours and provide equipment check-out, package pickup, emergency keys, and meal passes.
From the hours of 1 a.m. to 5 a.m., night staff perform security rounds and respond to emergency situations. Residents of Garner, Forbes, and Hopkins should go to the Gregory area office for their mail (located in Garner), while residents of Taft-Van Doren, Scott, Snyder, and Weston should go to the Peabody area office for their mail (located in Snyder). Residents of Barton and Lundgren Halls should pick up their mail in Clark Hall.
The graduate halls, Sherman and Daniels, offer 24-hour desk and mail service. Sherman and Daniels hall night clerks also do security rounds at night.
Bulletin boards are an important means for communicating important information about residence hall policies, procedures, and calendars. They also contain information regarding activities and events sponsored by the University, Colleges, or specific academic departments. They should be reviewed on a daily basis. Important information may also be communicated through the use of your campus email account and the University Housing website. It is important to stay connected.
Hall or floor-sponsored events may be publicized within the sponsoring unit. Approval of notices for events sponsored by non-residence hall/student organizations must be received from the Residential Life Office, located in 300 Clark Hall for undergraduate halls. In the graduate halls, all notices must be approved and posted by the hall office. Approved notices and announcements may be placed only on specified bulletin boards. Improperly posted and unapproved materials will be removed and discarded. The Code on Campus Affairs and Handbook of Policies and Regulations Applying to All Students indicates that a penalty of up to $25 per posting may be levied for unauthorized postings.
University Housing provides cable-ready connections in every residence hall room. Service includes over 90 channels available to you free of charge. To subscribe to additional premium cable channels or report problems with your cable service, contact Comcast Cable directly by calling 217-384-2500.
Channel 2, a closed-circuit channel available only to our
residents, is operated by University Housing’s Business and
Technology Services. Movie titles are selected by Residential Life
staff with suggestions from residents. Daily broadcast schedules are
found on Channel 2 and on our website at
www.housing.uiuc.edu/living/channel2. On this page you can also
suggest a movie or report any problems with the movies you watch.
(Please report general cable problems at the phone number above.)
In addition to movies, we broadcast announcements of University
Housing and campus events and occasionally show locally produced
video, including student productions! If you’d like to become
involved with the Housing Video Productions Group and/or submit some
of your video work for possible broadcast, go to
www.housing.uiuc.edu/videoproductions.

Housing has a full range of technology services for its residents. We operate sixteen computer centers; all open 24 hours a day, with approximately 325 computers and both color and black & white printers. In conjunction with CITES, Housing provides Ethernet networking to rooms in all residence halls. We also provide wireless network access in many common areas like dining halls, laundry rooms, and common areas and meeting rooms.
In our computer centers, staff members are available for assistance during posted hours – usually 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. Residents are expected to abide by site rules, listed on large multi-color signs.
Networking to rooms, dubbed URHnet (University Residence Halls network), is an Ethernet network connecting residence halls with the campus network and the Internet. Housing offers a variety of ways of helping residents connect to the network which include: Choose Your Path DVD (mailed to parents of new incoming students mid-May, and online at www.housing.uiuc.edu/chooseyourpath), the "Steps to the Net" booklet placed in rooms for opening, URHnet Help Line at 244-1111, an online help request found at www.housing.uiuc.edu/technology/Help/, and additional information located on the website. Student staff members, called NetTechs, respond to help requests by going to rooms.
It is the responsibility of URHnet users to conform to official policies implemented by the University. The primary goal of URHnet and the only reason it exists is to assist residents in their educational pursuits. It is understood that recreational uses are exercised but those considerations are not primary to management of the network and certain uses are inappropriate and possibly illegal.
As a URHnet user:
For more details about these guidelines, see information and additional links at www.housing.uiuc.edu/technology/.
More than 2,000 students each year take advantage of part-time employment opportunities available in their residence halls, dining facilities, computer centers, and hall libraries each year. This is a great way to earn money, make friends, and gain valuable experience in a convenient location. To apply to be a desk clerk, please see the hall/area secretary for details. Applications for positions in Dining Services can be picked up in the dining room office. Applications are available in the library office for positions working in the hall libraries. If you'd like to work in a computer support job in the halls, complete an online application at www.housing.uiuc.edu/employment/. The University of Illinois is an affirmative action, equal opportunity employer.
To report custodial or maintenance problems (loose tiles, lock problems, burned-out light bulb, etc.), and request bunking/de-bunking/bi-leveling of beds, complete a Request for Services form at the area/hall office. If an emergency maintenance problem exists (broken water pipe, power outage, etc.), contact a staff member immediately. When completing the Request for Services form, you should be specific about the concern. Doing so assists the Housing Facilities staff in assigning the proper staff member to repair the problem. You may complete a Request for Services form for any item in your room, on your floor, or within your community that needs cleaning or repair.
Residents who need immediate attention should contact McKinley Health Center (333- 2701) during normal business hours, Monday–Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., or the Dial-a- Nurse (333-2700) 24 hours a day. If you need emergency assistance, dial 9-911; then contact a Resident Advisor, phone the staff member on duty, or contact the hall/area office. If you need personal assistance, an Emergency Dean is on call 24 hours a day (333-0050).
Washers and dryers are available for use by residents of the university residence halls only. The facilities are located in the lower level of each residence hall or area. Washers are $1.25 and dryers start at 50¢ per cycle. To report a washer or dryer malfunction, please call Jetz directly at 800-527-4928, 24 hours a day.
The following is the format for addressing mail. The directory in this document should be checked for the street address of the residence halls.
Name
URH/Room Number
Street Address
City/State/Zip + 4
Mail is sorted by street address at the local U.S. Post Office and by room/hall at the hall/area mailroom—both the street address and the room/hall are required for delivery. If either is missing, mail will be delayed from two to five days.
Mail is sorted by mailbox number. If you receive a letter addressed to someone who does not reside in your room, please return it to the mailroom for forwarding according to postal regulations.
Once residents check out of the residence halls, mail forwarding follows U.S. Postal Service guidelines. Unless you leave a change of address at the mailroom/desk when you move out, first class mail will be forwarded to the home address on file, or it will be returned to sender if your home address is not available. Generally newspapers and most magazines cannot be forwarded. Only certain packages can be forwarded. Mail is NOT forwarded during Thanksgiving break, winter break, or spring break. Newspapers and items mailed at the newspaper rate are recycled.
The name on a mail or parcel delivery and on the student University i-card must be the same for one to receive the item. Pseudonyms or “business” titles cannot be accepted, and the item will be returned to sender. Using a false or fictitious name to order or receive items through the U.S. Postal Service may constitute mail fraud and will be reported when encountered.
Residents of Garner, Forbes, Hopkins, and the Urbana halls receive their mail at the area/hall office, as do residents of Taft-Van Doren, Scott, Snyder, and Weston. Residents of Barton and Lundgren Halls receive their mail at Clark Hall.

Campus mail will be placed in resident mailboxes, and students may send University business mail to University offices by dropping it into a Campus Mail drop box (no postage necessary). The Campus Mail system will not deliver seasonal or greeting cards (they will be discarded), large packages, or items that do not concern University business.
Each undergraduate hall has a desk clerk stationed at the hall or area main desk. These clerks are part of the security protection system in place during the evening. Outside doors of all halls are locked nightly at 7 p.m. with Daniels and Sherman Halls locked 24 hours a day on the weekends. Hall security keys or access cards will allow residents to enter their own building. Students must show their ID card (i-card) or other identification to any staff member upon request.
Space in the parking lots located around the residence halls are reserved primarily for housing staff that work in the halls. Lots designated as “Housing” lots are reserved 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Parking in such a Housing lot without an appropriate permit will result in a citation, and possible towing.
During hall opening in August and hall closing in May, the lots closest to residence halls can be used for loading and unloading only. This is to assist with traffic flow around high-density areas. See signs posted at your hall desk for specific dates and times.
The Division of Campus Parking and Transportation sells student parking permits for certain lots around campus. For more information about rates and lot availability, see their website at www.parking.uiuc.edu.
University housing is committed to recycling. Recycling bins are located conveniently on your floor near the trash rooms, computer labs, dining halls, laundry rooms, staff offices, main offices, libraries, vending areas, and public areas. The following products are recyclable: aluminum cans, steel cans, newspapers, certain plastic products, paper, and cardboard. For more information, call the Housing Recycling Office, 333- 3454, or access information online at www.housing.uiuc.edu/living/recycle.
At the end of each semester a food and clothing drive is held in the residence halls to assist residents in recycling their unwanted items. Check the main lounges or office areas for the proper donation boxes.
ATMs are located in Gregory e-CHOMPS (Forbes Dining Room) and in the lobbies of Florida Avenue Residence Halls and Illinois Street Residence Halls. There is also an ATM in Campus Recreation Center East for residents of Allen, Busey-Evans, and LAR. These machines are connected to accept a variety of cash cards.
A few halls have limited storage areas for luggage only. See your Resident Advisor or graduate hall Graduate Assistant for more information. Storage facilities are for the use of residents while they have current residence hall contracts. Storage is at your own risk. All items must have a current storage tag. Empty boxes will not be stored due to fire hazards.
While telephone instruments are not provided, local phone service is included in the room and board rates. You are responsible for paying all long distance and toll charges made with your ILLICALL card number. Never give out your card number. For campus directory information, refer to the on-line campus phone book at http://illinois.edu/ows/PH.
Visit the Illicall web site at http:illicall.uiuc.edu (no www) for detailed information about telephone services, including repairs, making international calls, voicemail and caller ID.

Our mission is to provide you with high quality and flexible dining services. Therefore, all of our meal plans offer a “free-flow” option. This means that you may use your meal plan at any dining facility regardless of which hall you may call home. This is great for residents who may prefer to eat a mid-day or evening meal close to classes or with friends living in other residences. We encourage you to visit each dining hall, specialty restaurant, and A La Carte location to discover the options available to you.
Meal PlansNOTE: This is an academic year contract that can only be cancelled before the dates listed in your contract. The 6 meals per week plans are not available to residents of the University undergraduate residence halls.
As an alternative, residents of the graduate halls can also elect to add Extra Credits to their i-cards to pay for meals. Extra Credits provide extra flexibility and can be used to purchase food items at A La Carte locations or to purchase Classic meals held in residence hall dining rooms. Extra Credits can be purchased through the web or at any area office, with no minimum required. Extra Credits never expire as long as you have an active i-card.
