PROGRAM

WHAT IS WIMSE?

WIMSE is one of the Living/Learning Communities in the University Residence Halls at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

WIMSE provides 135 women majoring in mathematics, science, and engineering curricula with resources, activities, and programs to enhance their academic and social experiences. The goal is to unite classroom and residential experiences to build a positive foundation for a future career.

WIMSE OFFERS YOU

ACADEMICS

The staff of WIMSE is dedicated to supporting the academic success of WIMSE residents in every way possible. The program offers a wide variety of services and resources designed especially for the WIMSE students.

Each semester, there are courses reserved for WIMSE residents, and many of those classes meet in FAR. Seats are reserved for WIMSE students in sections of courses that are commonly required by the math, science, and engineering majors.

WIMSE provides tutors who meet with students several nights a week in the WIMSE resource center. Residents of WIMSE also have access to a very complete set of study files for relevant classes.

Every WIMSE floor has a computer lab, and the computers are equipped with software that math, science, and engineering students need for their classes. The FAR library contains a special collection of reference materials specially chosen to meet the needs of WIMSE students.

The staff of WIMSE takes a significant role in supporting academic success by providing academic skills workshops and offering the opportunity to discuss academic issues.

ENVIRONMENT

WIMSE is located on the first three floors of Trelease Hall in the Florida Avenue Residence (FAR) Halls. FAR is a dynamic co-ed community of 1200 students located on the south side of campus.

FAR is across the street from the southeast recreation fields and one block from tennis and basketball courts. Champaign-Urbana buses serve the campus and both communities. Students ride all of the buses for free with their student ID, and several routes stop at the front door of FAR.

Career Development

The Faculty Dinner Series offers students the opportunity to dine and interact at least twice a semester with members of the Illinois faculty from relevant departments.

WIMSE courses and professional development workshops also bring students into contact with professionals from industry. Past activities have included panel discussions, workplace tours, and interviews.

WIMSE service projects offer students the opportunity to gain experience in their field of study. Projects have included designing an exhibit for the Orpheum Children’s Science Museum, working with Girls in Engineering, Math, and Science at local schools, staffing programs at the Anita Purves Nature Center, and volunteering at the Champaign County Humane Society.
