Brochure - Selecting Allen Hall

Q. How do I select Unit One/ Allen Hall?
A. The University sends Notification of Admission on two dates:  December 15 and March 1.  This Notification will include an acceptance form which you must return to the University to secure a place at the U of I.  This form will either be "paper" or on-line.  Upon receipt of your response (either paper or on-line) that you have accepted admission and plan to attend the University of Illinois, you will be sent a password, ID, and web-link that enables you to apply for University Housing.  If you are interested in joining the Unit One/Allen Hall community,  please list the Unit One code (UO) in your Area/Community Preference List.

Once you have selected Unit One as your first choice, you are also encouraged to complete the Living-Learning Community application and essay. The link for the LLC essay will be available once you have selected Unit One/Allen Hall as a preference.

Submit your online contract along with your $100 Advance Payment as soon as possible.

If you are unable to complete the contract online, please contact the Housing Information Office (housing@uiuc.edu or 217-333-7111) and a paper contract will be mailed to you.

Assignments will be made based on the date the contract and advance payment are received.

Q. Do I need to write an essay to be assigned to Unit One?
A. Although we do not require an essay, those who write essays are given first priority of assignment to Unit One/Allen Hall.

Q. How are students assigned to Unit One/Allen Hall?
A. Students’ requests are processed by date of receipt of contracts/advance payment. Students who request Unit One/Allen Hall as their hall of choice on the Undergraduate Residence Halls Online Contract and Preference List and who also write an essay will be the first assigned. For this reason, the earlier you submit your request and advance payment, the greater the probability of assignment to Unit One/Allen Hall.

Q. If I request Unit One/Allen Hall as my housing preference, what are my odds of being assigned there?
A. The short answer is – the earlier you apply, the better your chances will be.  The University has changed its Admission procedures this year, so we don't have a feel for our application rates.  However, assignments will continue to be offered on a first-request basis until all spaces are filled.  At the end of May, just prior to the start of Summer Orientation, Fall Hall Assignment notices are mailed to new contracts.

Remember:
You are ethically bound to attend the U of I once you have accepted admission.  However, in terms of your University Housing contract, you may cancel your contract by May 1, 2007
and get a full refund of your $100 Housing Advance Payment. Applying as soon as possible, even if you are not sure whether you will attend the U of I, is to your advantage.  You may also change your choice of residence hall without losing your "date of contract."

Q. What is the difference between Unit One and Allen Hall?
A. By choosing to live in Allen, students are also choosing Unit One; the two are inseparable. Allen is a University Residence Hall. Unit One is an academic program in Allen Hall. The degree to which a student makes use of Unit One/Allen Hall then becomes his/her choice.

Q. Is there a charge for Unit One?
A. For 2007-2008, we anticipate that Allen Hall room and board rate will include approximately $300 per year that goes toward supporting the Unit One program.

Q. Are there any other charges?
A. In general, no. Most charges for facilities (including photography and ceramics), access to personal computers, educational field trips, workshops, music lessons (in the Unit One program), and tutoring are covered by the basic fee, although some events and field trips may involve additional charges.
