Global Crossroads Newsletter
May 4, 2007
Hey All,
Oh no! It’s the last newsletter of the year, and the last one for me. You all better be sobbing and tearing your garments in
grief (although you don’t have to put on sackcloth or cover yourselves in ashes). I’m graduating to bigger and better
things, for instance, I will return the princess lured astray by a snake cult to her father and eventually become queen by my
own hand this summer (through the benevolence of the scholarship of the Howard Foundation and Kram). I enjoyed writing
this newsletter for all of you, and I hope you enjoyed reading it. Have a fun summer vacation and make sure to wear
sunscreen and clothes when you go outside in the hot sun.
Cheers,
Barbie Greene
We hope Global Crossroads has been a great place to live this past year and that you’ve made friends who will stick with you for life. We also hope that GC made it rewarding to live and learn in a diverse community. Whether you’re moving off-campus, to a new residence hall, studying abroad, returning to your home country, or on to other chapters of your life, please stay in touch! Let us know how we can improve! For those of you returning, we look forward to seeing you next year!

Fall 2007 Courses
PS 280 Introduction to International Relations
CRN: 38487 3 hrs.
Tuesday and Thursday 3-4:50 PM PAR Piper Hodson instructing
This course section, designed and reserved for students who live in the Global Crossroads Living-Learning Community,
explores the structure and processes of international relations, trends in international politics, and the future of the
international system in a setting of conflict and crisis. Because this section of the course is designed especially for the
Global Crossroads students, it will pay particular attention to the nature and influence of culture upon these processes, as
the actors in the international system interact. We will take advantage of the depth of international experience the students
bring to this course and explore a variety of perspectives on the most pressing international issues. This course satisfies
the General Education Criteria for a UIUC Social Sciences course.
HIST 199 Global Encounters at the Movies
CRN: 48005 Sec A 3 hrs.

Global encounters. Global history. Movies. Films. This course pairs movies with readings on global encounters in different
world areas at different points in time; often violent, sometimes not; people and cultures getting along sometimes,
mostly not. We will watch movies on war, colonialism, and other kinds of global encounters. Free popcorn. Monday
evenings from 6:30 PM - 8:20 PM is when the movies will be shown, but there will be alternative arrangements available
for those who cannot make the scheduled movie showings.
Fall 2007 Washington DC Internships
Internships?! In government! I did it, and it wasn’t resoundingly awful. Illinois-in-Washington is a program that will allows students of any major to take internships for credit in Washington, D.C. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Applications can be found at the Department of Political Science in room 361 of Lincoln Hall. For more information you can contact Dr. Denise Bauer (351-7102; dlbaer@uiuc.edu) or Dr. Marie Henehan (244-1824; mhenehan@uiuc.edu).
Summer 2007 Courses
Do you need to take a Political Science course but just can’t get into the course due to restricted access? Don’t spend all summer fuming like I did, take one of these summer courses and live at peace with your fellow man. They are about as restricted as a Disney movie, and more interesting.

Exhibition: Symagery
Absolutely irritated when someone uses a made-up word in a title (I grind my teeth just thinking of Louis Carroll)? Calm your rage by viewing this art exhibition by Melissa Pokorny on Friday, May 4th, in the Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities Lecture Hall at 805 W. Pennsylvania Ave. This exhibit shows the collision of public and private space, and will be open from 8 AM to 5 PM.
Lecture: The Gomti Riverfront in Lucknow, India: Revitalization of a Cultural Heritage Landscape
Beautiful buildings of India! Where will the funds come from to restore them, to remove the bullet holes and dirt and decay? Find out what steps are being taken at this lecture on Tuesday, May 8th. The lecture runs from noon to 1 PM, so the break in studying for finals won’t be very long, and the lecture will be in room 325 of Temple Buell Hall on our very own South Quad.
BrEAK: Café con Leche
Planning to spend Tuesday, May 8th, locked in your room, listening to Mozart’s Requiem over and over in the darkest corner of your closest? Don’t be like me (people will think you are weird no matter how often you tell them the closet is free from distractions, spacious and comfy), come to Café con Leche for a coffee break at the Asian American Cultural Center (1210 W. Nevada) between 3 PM - 6 PM. Coffee and snacks are provided.
Study Break: Red Pin Tuesdays
Been cramming incomprehensible texts for hours on end and have the strange urge to throw something? Leave your pillows and stuffed animals alone (especially the stuffed animals who protect you from the monsters under your bed), as they don’t deserve your wrath. You know who does…bowling pins! Imagine that you are the giant ball in Indiana Jones and the pins are Anthony Molina and Harrison Ford look-alikes who are stealing your stuff this Tuesday, May 8th, from 6:30 PM - 11:30 PM in the Illini Union Rec Room. You get a free game if you get a strike when a red pin is in the front.
EXHIBIT: The Muslim Experience
"The Muslim Experience" is an art exhibit at the Illini Union Art Gallery. The exhibit will run until May 11th. Please stop by whenever you can to observe the works done by many different U of I MSA students.
Survey: Graduating Senior Pre-med Survey
The Career Center is interested in learning more about our students’ premedical experience. We are asking that pre-med students who are graduation seniors complete the following survey. The responses are completely anonymous and the survey should take about 10-20 minutes to complete. For their participation, students can enter their email address to be entered in a drawing for one of four $50 gift certificates to the Illini Union Bookstore. Thank you for forwarding this survey on to graduating seniors with whom you work!

MOVIE: Gwoemul
Gwoemul , “The Host”, is showing at Boardman’s Art Theatre in Downtown Champaign, beginning May 4th. Are your finals scaring you? Go see a scary monster movie with outstanding visual effects as a study break, and to help you regain perspective. Boardman’s Art Theater web site has all of the details.
