Alternate Status
Each year we have more qualified candidates than actual vacancies at the time of the February hiring process. We know we will have additional vacancies identified throughout the spring & summer & even into the next academic year, thus we maintain an Alternate Pool.

Alternates are candidates who have completed the entire process and proven that they were very skilled and competitive, but just did not receive an assignment. There are approximately 40 men & 40 women offered RA alternate status each year, and 2-4 in the MA Alternate Pool. By August Training we typically hire an average of 30-50 total from the Alternate Pool. A few more may be offered positions during the Fall semester for an immediate start. Candidates remain in the Alternate Pool through October.  Once the new year's applications are due (exact date TBA), alternate status will "expire", and alternates will need to reapply. If Alternates are willing and able to wait-it-out, there is a good chance of being offered a position.

Alternates are encouraged to enroll in EOL 199: "Exploratory Dialogue on Diversity & Social Justice in Residential Communities" in the spring 2005 or Fall 2005.  This course will sharpen your dialogue and cross-cultural communication skills and understanding, as well as expose you to professional staff instructors who can advocate for your hiring should a vacancy come open during the semester!

HIRING TIMELINE
There is no timeline for hiring from the Alternate Pool. As vacancies occur, Resident Directors and/or Coordinators review all files of Alternates and make selections based on the needs of the specific community. Candidates accepting Alternate Status in February 2005 will remain "on call" for hiring through October 2005.  If you are not hired by October, your Alternate status "expires". To be considered for the following academic year, you need to reapply.

TRAINING
Candidates in the Alternate Pool should be mindful of Training Dates. If hired, they will be required to fulfill all Training Program requirements. Spring Orientation is Saturday, April 23, 2005. August Training begins Monday, August 8, 2005.

YOUR CONTACT INFORMATION
Please keep the Department of Residential Life updated on your contact information (especially over the summer months) so that if an RD would like to extend an offer to you they can contact you quickly! Call Cathy Armetta at 217-333-0770 to update your file.

REAPPLYING
If you have been an Alternate, your alternate status "expires" in October 2005 and you will need to reapply this coming October 2005 in order to update your entire file and be considered for a position in 2006.
