RESIDENCE HALL LIBRARY SYSTEM JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE: Residence Hall Student
Library Assistant
SUPERVISOR: Graduate Assistants; Library
Supervisor; or Library Director.
NATURE
AND SCOPE: The student library assistant
is the first point of contact for library patrons, often at the
circulation desk. The student library assistant should maintain a
neat appearance and helpful attitude.
HOURS:
Employee is required to work regularly scheduled combination of
afternoon and night shifts each week, to total 6 - 12 hours. During
weeks of final exams, when library has extended hours, a new
schedule is created and employee must work additional hours to help
cover the extended hours.
DUTIES:
1. Provide courteous service to all patrons; provide any extra
library service needed by disabled patrons.
2. Open and close library promptly as scheduled, using correct
opening and closing routines (doors, lights, computers, notifying
patrons of closing time, etc)
3. Accurately charge and discharge library materials.
4. Help patrons use the Library Gateway to identify and
locate materials in the University Library System and in other
libraries
6. File check-out cards accurately, using Dewey Decimal System.
7. Answer telephone with correct telephone etiquette.
8. Record attendance and circulation statistics in daily ledger.
9. Promptly check in newly‑received periodicals and newspapers
in the periodical check-in book, stamp ownership, and shelve
properly.
10. Before completing a shift, re‑shelve books and library
materials that have been returned or removed from the shelves.
11. Maintain neat and orderly library.
12. Keep library computer clean and printer loaded with paper;
perform simple trouble‑shooting procedures and report problems, as
appropriate.
13. Attend all staff meetings.
14. Administer all Library System policies and rules.
15. Discuss problems, concerns, and suggestions with the library
supervisor.
16. Keep accurate work records (timecards, trade and substitution
records).
17. Wear ID badge identifying student library assistant as an
employee of University Housing.
18. Perform other duties as assigned.
EMPLOYMENT
REQUIREMENTS: Students must reside
in University Housing during their first year of employment.
Before beginning work, students who are hired must be verified and
cleared by the Office of Student Financial Aid, if applicable.
They cannot be added to the payroll until they complete all the
necessary office paperwork, via NESSIE.
