Resident Advisor
Desk Clerks: We are pleased to
provide you with some information about our student desk clerk positions. We are excited about the prospect of
receiving your application and hope this information will be
informative and helpful. There are two graduate/upper division residence halls within
University Housing: Daniels Hall (1010 West Green Street in Urbana)
and Sherman Hall (909 South Fifth Street in Champaign). Both these
halls are open 12 months per year and have a 24-hour desk operation.
Student employees are hired, as needed, throughout the year. Clerks
may be hired to work from 3 hours per week up to 20 hours per week,
depending on hall needs and clerk availability. All applicants are
required to be enrolled in a degree-seeking program at the
University of Illinois and are subject to all student employment
policies and procedures. There are three categories of clerks:
• Office clerks
serve as the general receptionist for the hall; they answer phones
and work directly with residents to address their needs and/or
concerns.
• Mail clerks are
responsible for distributing federal, United States mail, UPS and
campus mail to the residents in an accurate, timely manner (only in
Sherman Hall). In Daniels Hall office clerks are responsible for the
mail.
•
Night clerks have the same
responsibilities as office clerks. Because their shift occurs
between 11pm and 7am, night clerks have additional duties, including
forwarding mail, doing rounds in the building and posting fliers.
Each clerk serves as an important direct link to the residents.
Because of this, it is always important to think of the residents’
needs and concerns. Please note the following non-negotiable
expectations for all clerks regarding our efforts to provide
customer service:
Be on time for your
shift.
Be courteous, in
person and on the phone.
Keep the desk area
clean and accessible.
During a shift,
doing homework and the use of the television and computers/e-mail
are privileges, not “rights”. They should not distract you from your
duties.
Only staff members
are allowed behind the desk. Remember, a clerk’s responsibility is
to the residents (our “customers”).
The dress code is
casual, but professional. Midriffs, halter tops, cut off shorts,
pajamas, etc. may not be worn. Shoes must be worn at all times.
Clerks wearing inappropriate attire will be asked to change and
repeat offenders may be subject to disciplinary action. To apply for
a desk clerk position in Daniels or Sherman Hall, select “Desk Clerk
Application” below. The University of Illinois is an affirmative
action, equal opportunity employer.
